Four decades on the tools
Owner Nigel Washer has been roofing since 1981 — across Tauranga, Auckland, Brisbane, Samoa and 21 years running Quality Roofing in Marlborough. Now based in North Canterbury, he brings that experience to roofs across Christchurch, Canterbury and the wider South Island.
Most of our work comes by referral. We have reroofed for the children — and grandchildren — of earlier clients. That only happens when the job is done properly, priced honestly and finished the way it was quoted.

Straight answers
Roofing questions, answered
How much does reroofing cost in Christchurch?
Most full residential reroofs in Canterbury land somewhere between $18,000 and $35,000 including scaffolding, depending on roof size, pitch, access and what we find underneath. As a rough anchor, long-run steel reroofing typically starts around $100 + GST per square metre installed. We quote every job individually after a free site visit — see our roof replacement cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
How long does a reroof take?
A typical house reroof takes three to five working days once we start, weather depending. We strip and re-cover in stages so your home is never left exposed overnight, and we own our edge protection and scaffold, which keeps scheduling in our control rather than waiting on subcontractors.
Do you work across the whole South Island?
Our day-to-day area is Christchurch, North Canterbury, Selwyn and Waimakariri. We regularly schedule work in Ashburton, Kaikōura and Marlborough, and as authorised RIGS installers we cover internal gutter conversions across the whole South Island.
Can you remove an asbestos roof and install the new one?
Yes — that is one of our specialties. We arrange licensed asbestos removal and disposal with independent air monitoring and a clearance certificate, then install your new long-run steel roof as part of the same project. One contract, one point of contact, no gap between removal and re-cover.
Is long-run steel better than tiles?
For most Canterbury homes, yes. Long-run Colorsteel is lighter than concrete tile (better in earthquakes), handles snow and nor'west winds well, sheds moss and debris, and typically outlasts pressed-metal and shingle roofs. It is also what most local builders specify for new builds. We'll give you an honest comparison for your specific roof rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Nigel is a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) for roofing, Quality Roofing carries public liability insurance, and we are certified installers for ecoTUFF TPO membrane and the authorised South Island installer for the RIGS gutter system. Site safety gear — edge protection, harnesses and scaffold — is our own.
